Malt Drive Park

Long Island City, Queens

Nick was the design lead and co-project manager at SCAPE for the design of a new 7-acre waterfront park from Concept Design through Construction Documentation. This project focused on resilient planting and the mitigation of flood risk while providing unique program areas and experiences along the water’s edge. Nick worked closely with F2 Environmental, the soils consultant, to design a sub-grade profile that was resilient to flood water and tailored to the planting design. A nuanced grading plan of the subgrade was coordinated with the drainage design to allow irrigation to flush out residual salt water after a storm, allowing the plants to thrive long-term. A lush palette of native coastal species creates an intimate environment for park users and wildlife.

A dog heat map informed the intentional design of ‘dog pee strips' and rip rap stones were reused on the edges of plant beds to creating a diverse planted shoreline edge. This park demonstrates the immense power of thoughtful landscape design to humanize the massive scale of development we’re seeing along the Greenpoint and LIC waterfronts.
